Basic Mountaineering Course
 
The objective of the Basic Course is :-
 
 
1.  
To teach the basic techniques of movement on rock, snow and ice.
2.  
To teach the theoretical and practical aspects of mountaineering and it’s allied subjects.
3.  
To create a correct attitude amongst the trainees so that they may view mountaineering as an art and not exclusively as a physical activity.
4.  
To motivate them on incentive to higher endeavor.
5.  
To make available to the trainees, suitable and relevant literature and reading material on mountaineering at the NIM campus.
6.  
To teach them how to make themselves comfortable and preserve their health in the mountain environment. To teach conservation of Himalayan environment.
7.  
To toughen their bodies by increasing their resistance to cold, hunger and fatigue.
 
The trainees of Basic course spend initial four to six days at Uttarkashi and Tekhla Rock Area where they undergo physical conditioning, toughening up exercises, long walks and extensive rock climbing training. Trainees thereafter spend next 19 to 20 days in the mountains.
 
 
 
Approach march to the Base Camp involves 2-3 intermediate camps, which helps the trainees acclimatize. During their stay in the mountains, students are trained in the basic techniques of snow craft, ice craft and rock climbing at high altitudes. On completion of training, basic course students are taken for a height gain, up to altitudes ranging between 12,000 and 15,000 feet.
