Candidates should be physically fit undergoing the course. Candidates can be tested for physical fitness prior to admission to any course. Candidates are advised to do the following:

1.
3-4 hours, 10 to 15 km. walk on uneven terrain with 12-15 kgs load in backpack for at least 3 days a week.

2.

Long distance running (regularly) and free hand exercises to strengthen the calf, thigh, shoulder and back muscles.

3.
Stop/reduce smoking and drinking and avoid stimulating drugs.

4.

Pre-Course Study (Mountaineering courses)- No previous knowledge of mountaineering techniques is necessary. There is no entrance test either, except a medical examination. Students are however advised on their own to read some books on mountaineering so as to kindle in themselves an interest in their surroundings, which will help them to enjoy their stay in the mountains.

Search & Rescue Course requires a high degree of physical fitness. It must be remembered that it is not possible to develop physical fitness and strength overnight. It needs a presustained effort.
